We began as a group of 80 people in 1983, meeting in various places around town. Since then we have been on an amazing journey, including buying the old Army Drill Hall in 1995 and launching several community initiatives like Shrewsbury Food Bank. Our church family now has 300+ adult members and meets right by the river in Shrewsbury town centre.
We are part of a network of churches called Christ Central, with friendships stretching through Shropshire and across the north of England, and overseas. Christ Central is part of Newfrontiers, a worldwide family of churches. Being connected helps us to share resources and support each other.
See the Christ Central website here.
We want to have a personal relationship with Jesus and see Him at work in our lives. Our vision is to see people in our town and beyond come to know Jesus and be transformed by Him too. Listen to our vision talk here.
What makes us...
Our values are the things that make us tick, the church that we want to be. We TRUST in the bible as God’s word and ENCOUNTER Jesus. Our IDENTITY is in Christ and our aim is to live with INTEGRITY and to ENCOURAGE each other.
Our DEVOTION to God fuels the ADVENTURE we're on.
Check out our values video below.
Terry, as lead elder, heads up our senior leadership team (we call it the Core Team!) We recognise his gift as an evangelist, regularly preaching the gospel and praying for healing. He is married to Helen who is also one of the core team. They have two teenage boys.
Helen heads up pastoral care:- pro active care ( e.g marriage, parenting, singles and training courses ) and reactive pastoral care. She regularly preaches and is passionate for people to know Jesus more.
Martin led the team at Barnabas for over twenty years. Now his local focus is teaching and social action, while he also runs training programmes for Christ Central Churches and the charity Jubilee Plus which he founded. Martin is married to Jane and they have three grown up daughters and two grandchildren.
Dave has been an elder since 2008 and is married to Esther, with two children, Joy and Zac. He oversees the running of the Church centre, midweek groups, helping new people integrate into the Church and our communications amongst other things.
Our Church is made up of people.
All sorts of different people.
What we have in common is faith.
Faith in Jesus Christ.
It is a personal faith in that each of us needs to make our own decision to follow Jesus. And yet when we have made that step, we are drawn together with others like us into this living, changing, dynamic thing called Church.
Our Church is not a meeting,
although we have Sunday meetings.
Our Church is not a building,
although we have a Church centre.
Our Church is a fellowship, a coming together in unity, of followers of Jesus.
We are not the focus, Jesus is.
